Chapter 14

Finn stood next to the hospital bed and stared down at Molly. Her face was pallid, as washed out as a winter sky. He pushed a stray curl away from her brow and laid his hand on her forehead. Her skin was cool to the touch. Shaking his head, he sank down into an uncomfortable chair and gripped the bedrail.

Daryl leaned against the wall across the room. “The doctor said he wanted to keep her overnight for observation. It’s a mild concussion. She’ll be okay.”

Finn nodded. “She’s lucky.” He massaged the back of his neck.

“Why don’t you go downstairs and get the ER doc to look at your neck and shoulders? That red-headed creep had you in a pretty good chokehold. I’m surprised you didn’t pass out.” He fingered the piercings on his face as he spoke.

Finn shook his head. “I’m fine.”

Daryl shifted from one foot to the other. “Did Bart or Nicole call someone for her? I mean, does she have family or an emergency contact?”

“Bart was too busy covering his ass with InMin and the news reporters. Nicole is worthless in emergencies, but she did manage to find Molly’s phone and get it to me.” He pulled it from his back pocket and stared at it. “I hope it isn’t locked with a password.”

“I’m sorry, man. I need to get home. You want me to give you a lift?”

“I’m not leaving her here alone.” He rose and gave Daryl a bear hug. “I’ll talk to you tomorrow.”

After his friend left, he returned to Molly’s bedside and stared at her. He mashed the palm of his hand against his forehead for a moment, then he retrieved her phone and swiped at the screen. There, in tiny letters on the locked screen, was an In Case of Emergency contact. William Rowe. It didn’t say what relationship he was to her.

He pulled out his own phone and tapped on the number pad. His finger hovered over the dial button for a moment. Finally, he hit it and listened to it ring. It rang a long time. He was about to hang up when a man answered it, sounding out of breath. “Hello?”

“Uh, is this William Rowe?”

“Yes. Who’s this?”

“My name is Finn. I’m an acquaintance of Molly’s. She has you on her phone as an emergency contact.”

The man didn’t say anything. Finn waited a moment and then said, “Hello?”

“Yes, sorry, I’m here. Is she okay?”

“Well, yeah. Well, she’s in the hospital. She had a little accident and has a mild concussion. We weren’t sure who to call until we found her phone.”

The man on the other end of the line grunted. “A concussion, you said?”

“A mild one. The doctor said she should be fine. I just thought I should let someone know.”

“Is she at MCV?”

Finn recognized that as the name of a large teaching hospital in Richmond. Did this man not know she was in Burns? “No. She’s down here in Southwest Virginia. Working temporarily. I thought—”

“I didn’t know she was working outside of Richmond.
